Just What Our New House Needed: A Ten Foot Slenderman
Since getting our new house, I knew I wanted to start going nuts-o with the outdoor decorations. I’ve never really had the bandwidth or bravery to go all out like I’ve always wanted to, and I gave myself little allowance for excuses this year.
For the last few years, I’ve always had one big Halloween project in mind — Slenderman. The Creepypasta is too scary for me to read, the cheesy scavenger hunt games are too scary for me to play, but I can’t get over the image of this huge, thin, skeletal nightmare with long creepy fingers luring your children into the woods. And that’s the kind of thing I want in my yard, not just at Halloween, but all year ‘round.
But I’ll settle for Halloween.
Here’s our boy all nice and standing tall (a larger feat than you might imagine):
And here’s how I made it:
I couldn’t possibly have made this happen without this amazing Instructables How-To. These folks did so much of the heavy lifting on figuring out dimensions, how to distribute weight, and material selection. I just tweaked a few angles and added some creepy hands. So to you, Ikelab, I say thank you. The kids in my neighborhood do not.
Here are some progress photos. For about three weeks, my hands were either covered in paper mache, getting stabbed with sewing needles, or patting myself furiously on the back for not only finishing such a daunting task, but actually coning out with something I could accept and that my elderly neighbor reviewed as, “Now what is that? I like that.”
